Cheyyur is a small town 7 kms from ECR, during the reign of the Chola kings, a temple was constructed at Jayamkonda- cholapuram, now known as Cheyyur, a village in Chingleput District, 18 miles from Madurantakam. In those days this place was a dense forest and kept as a reserve for the Chola kings to bunt.

The State Government has suggested Cheyyur, about 100 km south of Chennai, and Nagapattinam as possible sites for locating the proposed Ultra Mega Power Project in Tamil Nadu.
