The country: The UAE is a country made up of seven 'emirates' Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al-Quwain, Ras Al-Khaimah, Fujairah. The geography: The United Arab Emirates is situated on a pensinsula in the Arabian Gulf. It is bordered by Oman to the east and Saudi Arabia to the west and south. Iran is the closest country to it from the north. The UAE is 83,600 sq.km (including 200 islands - approximately).
Language: The official language of the UAE is Arabic. Other languages spoken are English, Hindi, Farsi. A large number of the expatriate population are from the sub-continent, the Philippines, Iran, and just about any country. So you will find people here speaking Urdu, Tagalog, Malayalam, Russian, South African and languages. Currency: The United Arab Emirates currency is called the Dirham. Arab Emirate Dirham (=Dhs or AED) 100 Fils = 1 Dirhams.
Dubai today is an important tourist destination and a port-city.Jebel Ali its port constructed in the 1970s, has the largest man-made harbour in the world. This city is also known as The City of Knowledge. It is known for it beautiful and impressive achitectual buildings, mosques, museums and distinctive Islamic designed souqs. Historically known for its cultural, political and commercial infrastructure, this ancient emirate portrays the rich and varied heritage of the region. The emirate boasts of its glorious naval past reckoned as an important Trade Center. Abu Dhabi is the capital of the emirate of the same name, largest of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates and is also the capital of the United Arab Emirates. It is said by some to be the richest city in the world and is located in the north central UAE. The city lies on a T-shaped island jutting into the Persian Gulf from the central western coast.
